Vein Treatments Q & A

What are spider and varicose veins?

Spider veins are weblike or threadlike small veins that commonly appear in the face and legs. They’re usually purple or red. Spider veins don’t protrude from your skin.

Varicose veins are much larger, and often look twisted or knotted. They bulge out from your skin, and usually occur only in the legs.

When might I need vein treatments?

If you have symptomatic or bothersome facial or leg veins, you could need vein treatment at Dermatology Arts. The two main reasons for considering vein treatments are physical symptoms and cosmetic concerns.

Physical symptoms

Although rare, spider veins can potentially cause itchiness, leg tiredness, and leg aching. Varicose veins often cause significant discomfort, leg heaviness, itching, and tiredness.

Cosmetic concerns

In most cases, the main problem with spider veins is cosmetic. These veins can really affect your appearance, often causing distress and frustration.

Due to their vivid coloring, spider veins can be difficult to cover with cosmetics. Varicose veins are particularly frustrating because they can change the whole appearance of your legs.

If your spider or varicose veins bother you for any reason, set up a vein treatment consultation at Dermatology Arts to find out about your options.

How do vein treatments work?

There are several options for vein treatment today, including injections that wither the veins (sclerotherapy) and light-based treatments. At Dermatology Arts, the team offers VBeam Perfecta treatment for veins.

With VBeam Perfecta treatment, a concentrated laser beam passes through your skin and into the vein, which then shatters into many tiny fragments that heat your vein from the inside, causing it to close off. The laser frequency targets only blood vessels. Your skin doesn't absorb the laser energy, so there's no damage to your healthy skin.

What do vein treatments feel like?

Vein treatments with the VBeam Perfecta are generally very well-tolerated by most Dermatology Arts patients. The built-in Dynamic Cooling Device™ uses cryogen technology to help maintain your comfort while protecting your skin.

The team can also use topical numbing cream to minimize any discomfort. Most people say the treatment feels like popping or snapping against their skin, but it’s not very painful.

When will I see results from vein treatments?

How soon you’ll see results can depend on the type and size of the vein, but in general many patients notice a difference after as little as one treatment session. You may need a series of treatments for full vein treatment.
